:: LIMESTONE, ONIX & TRAVERTINE

:: LIMESTONES
Limestone is a sedimentary rock, formed from the remains of ancient sea creatures such as oysters, mussels, and other ancient shellfish and invertebrates, that have dropped to the sandy bottom of ancient seas, and then compressed over millions of years. Some limestones contain perfectly preserved ancient fossils that become one-of-a-kind conversation pieces when captured in finished products.

Slate is a fine-grained, metamorphic rock that is derived from sedimentary shale deposits. Shale is ancient silt and clay beds that have been compressed and heated over time. The shale, through its metamorphic life cycle, "grows-up" to be slate, and eventually a rock termed gneiss. The available finishes for slate include cleft (rough), bush hammered, and honed.

:: ONIX
Onyx is a calcareous stone (calcium based like marble), which possesses a translucent, layered appearance, in rich pastel colors. The stone is formed naturally in caves and is more commonly referred to as 'stalactites & stalagmites'. Onyx is formed by the precipitation of water through ground rock, which carries the minerals and it forms in a column on ceilings of caves. Onyx has beautiful coloration and movement, which is accentuated by the translucency of the material.

:: TRAVERTINE
Travertine is limestone that has been formed over a long period of time. The product is porous with many visible holes. It is available in colours ranging from ivory to golden brown. The holes and cavities may be filled with matching portland cement, coloured epoxy, or polyester resins.

:: APPLICATIONS

Applications include interior wall cladding, bathroom flooring, vanity tops, trim, and ornamental workings such as clocks, bird-baths, pilasters, book-ends, etc, fireplace surrounds and furniture. Because they are more porous stones, some care should be taken when used in the kitchen as flooring or countertops.

Slate is a very strong, impermeable material that is generally used for flooring tile, fireplace surrounds, roofing tile, billiard tables, and as we have all seen, blackboards in classrooms.

Some custom onix applications include the backlighting of the material with lights, to illuminate the stone and maximize its translucent properties.

:: CARE

After installation, seal with a penetrating stone sealer. Sealing will minimize any absorption of liquids that might stain the material. Polished marble, limestone and travertine can still, however, be damaged by acidic substances (such as vinegar, citrus drinks, mustard and catsup). These acids can dull a polished surface or roughen a honed finish if not wiped up promptly.

If necessary, clean with a stone cleaner, neutral Ph cleaner or mild dishwashing liquid. Never use abrasive cleansers, "soft scrub" products or harsh or acidic chemicals on any stone as these can scratch or dull the polished finish. A good rule of thumb is never to use anything on your stone that you wouldn’t use on your hands.

There are excellent stone-specific cleaning products available, including pH-neutral cleaners that are specifically formulated to be gentle to stone surfaces. Avoid cleaning products not specifically designed for marble, limestone or travertine.
